Alamo

On February 23, 1836 a Mexican army, estimated at 1,800 to 6,000 men and commanded by General Santa Anna, began a siege of the Alamo in Texas. The small Texan defending intensity level was supplemented by some later arrivals, and amounted to virtually 184 men. For 13 days the Alamos defenders held out before organism routed on March 6. The Alamo thus became for Texans a symbol of marvelous resistance. The strife of the Alamo Mission San Antonio de Valero was established in 1718. It was the first of five-spot Spanish rushs founded in San Antonio to Christianize and educate resident Indians. Its mission subprogram completed, the old buildings were abandoned by 1836 when the site--by then know as the Alamo--became the cradle of Texas Liberty.1 In December 1835 at the hypothesis of the Texas struggle for independence, a detachment of Texas volunteers drove a Mexican force from San Antonio and occupied the Alamo.
